MODFLOW in ModelMuse

This topic describes where in ModelMuse you can set the various options in MODFLOW

MODFLOW-2005,MODFLOW-NWT, MODFLOW-OWHM, MODFLOW-LGR, MODFLOW-CFP

Name file

The packages written to the name file is controlled by which packages have been activated in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The head and drawdown output is controlled in the Head and Drawdown Panes of the MODFLOW Output Control dialog box. The cell-by-cell flow file is controlled in the Budget Pane of the MODFLOW Output Control dialog box. Externally generated files can be specified in the MODFLOW Name File dialog box.

LGR Control File

In MODFLOW-LGR models, the LGR Control file data is specified in the Child Models dialog box.

Basic (BAS6) package

The comments and options in the Basic package are specified in the Description Tab and Options Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box. HNOFLOW is also specified on the Options Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box. The IBOUND array is specified using the Active data set. The STRT array is specified with the MODFLOW_Initial_Head data set. Data sets can be edited in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. Another option for specifying the SRTR array is to specify an external binary file containing the initial heads on the Options Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box.

Discretization (DIS) file

When starting a new MODFLOW, you can specify the grid in the Initial Grid dialog box. The number of layers can be edited later in the MODFLOW Layer Groups dialog box. Data sets for the elevations of the top of the model and the bottom of each layer group will be created. The values of these data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. There are numerous ways to edit the grid. See Grid for more details. The stress periods are specified in the MODFLOW Time dialog box. The length and time units are specified on the Options Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box.

Multiplier (MULT) and Zone (ZONE) files

Multiplier and Zone arrays are used in conjunction with parameters in the LPF, UPW, HUF2, RCH, EVT, and ETS packages. The parameters are defined in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. For the LPF and UPW paakages, the user specifies whether multiplier or zone arrays will be used with a particular data set. If they are used, ew data sets will be created whose values can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. For parameters in the HUF2, the user can specify which parameters apply to which hydrogeologic units in the MODFLOW Hydrogeologic Units dialog box. For each parameter in each hydrogeologic unit, the user also specifies whether multiplier or zone arrays are used with it and, if so, data sets will be created to define the values of the data arrays. With the RCH, EVT, and ETS packages, Objects are used to specify where each parameter applies using the RCH, EVT, and ETS panes on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. For these packages, the extent of an object that defines one of these parameters is used to define the zone array for the parameter and the values for the parameter for the object define the multiplier arrays. PVAL file

The parameter values associated with each parameter are defined in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. They also can be specified in the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Groundwater Flow Packages

Block-Centered Flow (BCF) package

The BCF package is activated on the BCF6: Block-Centered Flow Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. If Wetting is used, it is activated on the Wetting Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box. The layer properties are specified in the Basics Tab of the MODFLOW Layer Groups dialog box. Data sets for the remaining data in the BCF package will be created with the BCF package is activated. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box.

Layer Property Flow (LPF) package

The LPF package is activated on the LPF: Layer Property Flow Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. If Wetting is used, it is activated on the Wetting Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box. The layer properties are specified in the Basics Tab of the MODFLOW Layer Groups dialog box. Data sets for the remaining data in the LPF package will be created with the LPF package is activated. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Hydrogeologic Unit Flow (HUF2) package

The HUF2 package is activated on the HUF2: Hydrogeologic Unit Flow Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. If Wetting is used, it is activated on the Wetting Tab of the MODFLOW Options dialog box. The Hydrogeologic units are defined in the MODFLOW Hydrogeologic Units dialog box. The layer properties are specified in the Basics Tab of the MODFLOW Layer Groups dialog box. Data sets for the remaining data in the HUF2 package will be created with the HUF2 package is activated or when hydrogeologic units are defined. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Upstream Weighting UPW

The UPw package is activated on the UPW: Upstream Weighting Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The layer properties are specified in the Basics Tab of the MODFLOW Layer Groups dialog box. Data sets for the remaining data in the LPF package will be created with the LPF package is activated. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Horizontal Flow Barrier (HFB6) package

The HFB6 package is activated on the HFB: Horizontal Flow Barrier Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The barriers are defined with polyline or polygon objects in the HFB: Horizontal Flow Barrier Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Unsaturated Zone Flow (UZF) package

The UZF package is activated on the UZF: Unsaturated Zone Flow Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. Data sets for UZF package will be created with the UZF package is activated. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. Transient data for the UZF package is specified on the UZF: Unsaturated-Zone Flow Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box.

Seawater Intrusion (SWI2) package

The SWI2 package is activated on the SWI2: Seawater Intrusion Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. Data sets for SWI2 package will be created with the SWI2 package is activated. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box.

Specified Head Boundaries

Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) package

The Boundary Flow and Head package input file is created by MODFLOW-LGR to communicated between parent and child models. It is not created manually.

Time-Variant Specified Head (CHD) package

The CHD package is activated on the CHD: Time-Variant Specified-Head Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The specified head boundaries are specified on the CHD: Time-Variant Specified Head Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Flow and Head Boundary (FHB) package

The FHB package is activated on the FHB: Flow and Head Boundary Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The specified flow and head boundaries are specified on the Flows in FHB: Flow and Head Boundary Package and Heads in FHB: Flow and Head Boundary Package on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box.

Recharge (RCH) package

The RCH package is activated on the RCH: Recharge Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The recharge are specified with objects on the RCH: Recharge Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Well (WEL) package

The WEL package is activated on the WEL: Well Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The wells are specified with objects on the WEL: Well Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Head-Dependent Flow Boundaries

Drain (DRN) package

The DRN package is activated on the DRN: Drain Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The drains are specified with objects on the DRN: Drain Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Drain Return (DRT) package

The DRT package is activated on the DRT: Drain Return Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The drains are specified with objects on the DRN: Drain Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Evapotranspiration (EVT) package

The EVT package is activated on the EVT: Evapotranspiration Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The evapotranspiration data are specified with objects on the EVT: Evapotranspiration Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Evapotranspiration Segments (ETS) package

The ETS package is activated on the ETS: Evapotranspiration Segments Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The evapotranspiration data are specified with objects on the ETS: Evapotranspiration Segments Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

General-Head Boundary (GHB) package

The GHB package is activated on the GHB: General-Head Boundary Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The boundary data are specified with objects on the GHB: General-Head Boundary Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Lake (LAK) package

The LAK package is activated on the LAK: Lake Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The lakes are specified with objects on the LAK: Lake Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. The user defines LKARR which corresponds to the Lakebed_Leakance data set in ModelMuse. The values of the data set can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. The Lake_ID data set can be used for visualization purposes.

Multi-Node, Drawdown-Limited Well (MNW1) package

The MNW1 package is activated on the MNW1: Multi-Node Well Package (Version 1) Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The multi-node wells data are specified with objects on the MNW1: Multi-Node Well Package (Version 1) Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box.

Multi-Node Well (MNW2) package

The MNW2 package is activated on the MNW2: Multi-Node Well Package (Version 2) Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The multi-node wells data are specified with objects on the MNW2: Multi-Node Well Package (Version 2) Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box.

Reservoir (RES) package

The RES package is activated on the RES: Reservoir Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The reservoirs are specified with objects on the RES: Reservoir Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. The user define the Reservoir_Bed_Thickness, Reservoir_Elevations, and Reservoir_Hydraulic_Conductivity data sets in ModelMuse. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box. The Lake_ID data set can be used for visualization purposes.

Riparian Evapotranspiration package

The RIP package in MODFLOW-OWHM is activated on the RIP: Riparian Evapotranspiration Package of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The reservoirs are specified with objects on the RIP: Riparian Evapotranspiration Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. The user defines plant groups in the Riparian ET Plant Groups dialog box

River (RIV) package

The RIV package is activated on the RIV: River Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The rivers are specified with objects on the RIV: River Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box.

Streamflow-Routing (SFR) package

The SFR package is activated on the SFR: Stream-Flow Routing Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The streams are specified with objects on the SFR: Stream-Flow Routing Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box. The Link Streams dialog box can be used with the SFR package.

Stream (STR) package

The STR package is activated on the STR: Stream Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The streams are specified with objects on the STR: Stream Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Parameters for this package can be edited in the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box or the Manage Parameters dialog box. The Link Streams dialog box can be used with the STR package.

Solvers (DE4, GMG, PCG, PCGN, SIP, NWT)

All of the solvers are activated and fully specified in the of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box.

Output

Gage (GAGE) package

Gages for Lakes and Streams are defined in the LAK: Lake Package Pane and SFR: Stream-Flow Routing Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. Defining one or more gages automatically activates the GAGE package.

HYDMOD (HYD) package

The HYD package is activated on the HYD: HYDMOD Package of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. The observation locations are specified with objects on the HYD: HYDMOD Package Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box.

Link-MT3D (LMT) package

The LMT package is activated by activating the BTN package in MT3D on the BTN: Basic Transport Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box.

Multi-Node Well Information (MNWI) package

Information for MNWI package is specified on the MNW2: Multi-Node Well Package (Version 2) Pane on the MODFLOW Features Tab of the Object Properties dialog box. If any such information is specified, the MNWI package is automatically activated.

Output Control (OC) option

Data for the OC option is specified in the MODFLOW Output Control dialog box.

Subsidence

Interbed Storage (IBS) package

Subsidence and Aquifer-System Compaction (SUB) package

The SUB package is activated on the SUB: Subsidence and Aquifer-System Compaction Package Pane of the MODFLOW Packages and Programs dialog box. Delay and No-Delay interbeds are defined in the Delay Beds Tab and No-Delay Beds Tab of the MODFLOW Layer Groups dialog box. Data sets related to the interbeds are automatically created when the delay or no-delay interbeds are created. The values of the data sets can be specified in the Data Sets dialog box or with objects in the Data Sets Tab in the Object Properties dialog box.
