Continuous Hydrologic Instrumentation Monitoring Program (CHIMP)

Continuous Hydrologic Instrumentation Monitoring Program (CHIMP) is an electronic version of the USGS Continuous Water-Quality Monitor Field Form [165KB PDF] for use on (personal digital assistants (PDAs) with the PocketPC/Windows Mobile operating system (or PC with use of an emulator). CHIMP is used to collect data about monitor fouling and calibration data during site visits to active continuous water-quality monitors. CHIMP is a component of the Continuous Water Quality Committee's (CWQC) recommended path for water-quality records. CHIMP was developed by the Field Computing Integration and Support (FCIS) team.

CHIMP allows users to collect before- and after-cleaning, calibration, and final measurements and all associated metadata for any water-quality monitor. CHIMP supports the methods described in USGS Techniques and Methods (TM) 1-D3 (Wagner and others, 2006) for water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Users can also collect measurements for any other sensors (chlorophyll, UV nitrate, blue-green algae, total dissolved gas, etc.) using the "Other" sensor setup option (see user manual [4.3MB PDF]). The resulting XML output can uploaded to SiteVisit [510KB PDF] and can be viewed in a field sheet format using the CHIMP stylesheet. Data corrections derived from site-visit information are easily and automatically computed for specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity when CHIMP is used in conjunction with Site Visit and the automated correction loader (ACL).
