Approving Official


All spatial data sets and their metadata must be approved before they can be released.
The NEW process for publication approval is the IPDS. This USGS Information Product Data System (IPDS) is a Web based application that documents and tracks the review, approval, and dissemination of information products that are subject to Fundamental Science Practices (FSP). The system is available to anyone with an enabled Active Directory account over the USGS Intranet. You can track the progress of your project through the IPDS

The Approval and Authorization of a routing form can still be used to place your data on the node. The Form 9-1531 (PDF), or Form 9-1325 (PDF),, can be filled out, signed by your supervisor, then submitted to your publication specialist. for approval.

Please provide the Name and Title of your Supervisor.

Type of Data Submittal


Leave the "New" button checked if the coverage is not already in our archives. If this is a revision, check "Revised." if you would like edits to any of your existing files on the node.

Is Your Data A Model Archive


Leave the "No" button checked if your data archive is not part of the Modeling Archive.
If your archive is part of the Modeling Archive, please check "Yes." and be sure to include the directory name of your project, so that the path for your links and compressed downloads in your metadata file follows the /dsdl/gwmodels/USGS SERIES NUMBER format.
Examples: /dsdl/gwmodels/SIR2016-5022
                 /dsdl/gwmodels/OFR2016-XXXX

All newly released groundwater model archives ( /GIS/dsdl/gwmodels/ ) are required to contact Martha Watt (609) 771-3908) (Representing the OGW) prior to being sent the USGS WMA NSDI NODE.


Coverage Name


You can name your GIS files with any naming convention you desire (some GIS application have specific naming convention specifications), since we ask you to compress your downloadable GIS files in a folder for easy downloads. Though you should have had your GIS data reviewed by 2 other GIS reviewers before publication, we may review your GIS data (Coverage Name) for accuracy and to ensure the metadata contains the related attributes, links and schema relating from the GIS data to the metadata.

Metadata File Name


The name of your metadata.xml file, can basically be named anything you would like (example: ada-vamoosa_aquifer.xml, ag_chem.xml, agcrop1.xml, etc.,) unless it relates to a USGS Formal Publication Series like (ds, pp, sim, sir, etc) - then it should be named with that USGS Formal Series acronym and number. Note: If you have a dataset (mdb, gdb, raster, etc., file) that has more than one metadata (xml) file associated with it - please submit this form for each metadata file referencing that data set to better help us inventory our data. Ideally the names of the metadata files should be alphabetically similiar see Preparing Metadata for the WRD NSDI Node for information about naming conventions.

Title or description


This field is used only to help us identify the dataset. The title tag is located within the metadata.xml file.
Example: Title: Ada-Vamoosa aquifer
