The Stream (STR) package is used to simulate streams. The flow in a stream is routed instantaneously to downstream streams. The SFR package was later developed from the STR package. However, the input format and capabilities of the two packages are sufficiently different that the STR package was retained in MODFLOW alongside the SFR package. Unlike the SFR package, the Stream (STR) package has an associated Stream Observation package.

The Stream (STR) package can use either specified heads in each cell or the heads can be calculated. Check the Calculate stage (ICALC) checkbox in order to calculate stage. When stage is calculated, a rectangular channel cross section is used and the modeler is required to specify values or width, slope and channel roughness for each stream reach.

Parameters can be used to help specify the stream conductance. If any parameters are defined, the modeler must use parameters will all the streams.
