Project Summary: Arsenic mobilization in groundwater systems is an issue worldwide. Studies have shown that although Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is a viable method for protecting and improving groundwater aquifers, a downside of it is the release of toxic trace elements (like arsenic) from aquifer sediments to groundwater. This study aims to identify the chemical reactions that enable the release of arsenic at a MAR site in Southeastern Virginia. I will use laboratory experiments to delineate the reactions and will use the data in a model to predict the extent of arsenic mobilization at MAR sites.
