Project Summary: Lake Mitchell, South Dakota, suffers from harmful algal blooms caused by excess nutrients in the water. A new wetland was built to filter these nutrients before they reach the lake, but its effectiveness is unknown. Our project will test how well the wetland works by regularly checking water quality?measuring nutrients and oxygen?and studying algae using advanced DNA techniques. We will collect samples above and below the wetland weekly. Results will be shared on a public website linked to the City of Mitchell, so everyone can see the data in real time. This dashboard will help warn about algae risks early. We'll also train students in water testing and data analysis, preparing them for science careers. By working with the city and local groups, we'll provide clear information to improve lake management and keep the water safer for the community.
