Project Summary: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in partnership with the City of Lincoln and the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, is working on a project to reduce flooding and improve water quality in Deadman's Run. Over 500 properties are currently at risk of flooding, so two retention ponds, including one on East Campus, will be built to control water flow. Additionally, four wetlands along Pecan Creek, a tributary of Deadman's Run, will help filter pollutants and improve water quality. To understand water flow and quality, a hydrologic model will be created and water samples collected during different conditions. These samples will be tested for nutrients, bacteria, and sediment. Monitoring will help estimate the wetlands' impact on pollution reduction. The project team plans to apply for additional funding to continue studying water quality after the wetlands are built, ensuring long-term environmental benefits for the area.
