Project Summary: Maine's lakes are essential for the state's environment, economy, and communities, providing habitats for wildlife, recreational opportunities, and drinking water for 400,000 people. These lakes contribute $14 billion annually to the economy and support thousands of jobs. However, threats like nutrient runoff and toxic algae blooms are reducing water quality, endangering both ecosystems and livelihoods. This project uses artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven models to better understand and predict changes in lake health. A key goal is to expand research to underserved lakes and communities that lack resources for water quality monitoring. By working closely with policymakers, community members, and conservation groups, the project will develop tools and strategies to protect Maine's lakes. An open-data portal will make this information accessible to the public, helping people make informed decisions and take action. Through outreach and education, this initiative aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of Maine's lakes.
