Multi-Sensor Integration of Surface Deformation and Terrestrial Water Storage for Land Subsidence Risk Assessment in Louisiana's Capital Region

Institute: Louisiana
Year Established: 2025 Start Date: 2026-01-01 End Date: 2026-12-31
Total Federal Funds: $17,027 Total Non-Federal Funds: $17,453

Principal Investigators: Ahmed Abdalla

Project Summary: In Southeast Louisiana, land subsidence is sinking the ground and threatening water, infrastructure, and ecosystems. This project will study the capital area using satellite data (InSAR for ground movement and GRACE for groundwater). Machine learning will improve GRACE data detail with local inputs like rainfall and soil moisture. The results will produce a detailed risk map to help planners and managers protect infrastructure, manage groundwater, and reduce future risks.
