Project Summary: Plastic pollution is a growing problem. One significant source is ?nurdles?, or small plastic pellets used in manufacturing items like plastic bottles and bags. Nurdles can easily escape into the environment during transportation and at production facilities, particularly near rivers and waterways. Few studies have measured nurdle pollution in rivers. This study will measure nurdles in Illinois rivers, focusing on identifying sources, mapping distribution, and tracking where nurdles accumulate. By focusing on rivers near plastic production facilities, this research will provide data to support policies and industry practices to reduce nurdle pollution. Additionally, we will engage with industry representatives and environmental organizations to raise awareness and collaborate on solutions. The goal is to protect Illinois's freshwater resources from this pervasive form of plastic pollution and promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
