Project Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical public health issue, leading to millions of deaths worldwide. Recreational waters can harbor AMR bacteria, posing health risks to those who come in contact with them. Our study will access the prevalence and distribution of AMR in Lake Michigan, specifically focusing on Chicago's recreational waters. By systematically sampling water and using traditional culture methods alongside advanced molecular techniques, we will identify and quantify resistant bacteria and genes. Our research will explore the link between environmental factors, and AMR presence. Higher concentrations of resistant bacteria are expected at urban beaches, highlighting the impact of human activities. Mapping these hotspots will help inform public health policies and mitigation strategies. Our findings will help develop informed strategies to combat the growing threat of AMR in our aquatic environments and safeguard community health.
