Project Summary: Our project aims to address the pressing environmental challenges facing American Samoa's ridge-to-reef ecosystems, which are impacted by land-based pollution and climate change. These unique ecosystems, connecting mountains to coral reefs, are particularly vulnerable due to their small watersheds and volcanic soils. Effective conservation requires combining scientific research with local and indigenous knowledge. However, there is a gap between research findings and practical decision-making. To bridge this gap, we propose a two-year project to enhance student engagement and collaboration with local agencies. Students will participate in hands-on scientific activities, such as water quality monitoring and agroforestry projects, to develop practical conservation strategies. This project will also utilize advanced analytical techniques to improve the dissemination of ridge-to-reef knowledge among stakeholders. By integrating education and community involvement, we aim to foster sustainable environmental practices and support the development of future environmental leaders in American Samoa.
