Harnessing Bacteria-Microalgae Interactions for Enhanced Onsite Wastewater Treatment

Institute: Hawaii
Year Established: 2025 Start Date: 2026-01-01 End Date: 2026-12-31
Total Federal Funds: $41,983 Total Non-Federal Funds: $41,983

Principal Investigators: Zhiyue Wang, Marek Kirs

Project Summary: The project aims to develop a novel solution for cesspool replacement in Hawai?i. Microalgae and bacteria will be cultured together in such systems to save energy and remove contaminants. A model integrating molecular tools and mathematical computation will be developed to simulate and predict interactions between the two species. The predictions can therefore be used to optimize the system design for more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.
