Project Summary: Our project develops a modular, electrochemical device to capture and destroy short-chain PFAS on-site with integration with renewable energy. Our treatment device combines electrosorption technology with catalytic electrodes for the capture, release and destruction of PFAS based purely on electrochemical control. Our project focuses on the chemical design of the polymer sorbents, device fabrication and integration, and evaluation of PFAS in impacted groundwater and wastewater streams. We will collaborate with local stakeholders such as the Sanitary District of Decatur, to evaluate our treatment technologies in Illinois-relevant water contexts, and provide opportunities for the training and development of both graduate and undergraduate students within Illinois.
