Estimating change in crop water demand and water withdrawals for irrigation in southern Idaho due to climate change

Institute: Idaho
Year Established: 2023 Start Date: 2023-09-01 End Date: 2024-08-31
Total Federal Funds: $39,000 Total Non-Federal Funds: $39,000

Principal Investigators: Karen Humes

Project Summary: Idaho is third in the nation for the total volume of water withdrawn from a combination of groundwater and surface water sources. Water use in crop irrigation accounts for approximately 86% of the vast water volume withdrawn on an annual basis in our state. Increased air temperatures during the growing season are forecast to occur in Idaho in coming decades.
