Project Summary: This project will mainly focus on investigating geographical and environmental challenges associated with the operation of the Marpi landfill in Saipan, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and develop options to address such challenges. The main goals of this investigation include the following: (i) Identify natural resource protection challenges associated with operating the Marpi landfill and landfill stability-related challenges, which can be harmful, when damaged or failed, to humans and the surrounding environment; (ii) Identify current and historic efforts to address such challenges and evaluate the pros and cons of the efforts; and (iii) Develop conceptual options to overcome such landfill operational challenges (the intent of developing these conceptual options is to provide a practical roadmap to make a decision for the next steps to address identified challenges).
