Project Summary: The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulates over 90 contaminants under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Under the SDWA, National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs) regulate contaminants. The four major islands in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Yap, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Kosrae have their own water and utility authorities. However, their ability to test water quality is relatively limited due to a lack of analysis tools, skills, and contaminant information. The WERI Water Quality Laboratory (WQL) offers twenty-nine water quality analysis services, including six NPDWR-regulatedd pollutants throughout the Western Pacific regions. The WQL is also planning to expand our analysis capacity in the next five years. Thus, information sharing and training in water quality laboratory techniques by WERI personnel will benefit the FSM water agencies by helping to expand the capacities of their own laboratories and in the long run raise public confidence in them.
