Project Summary: The Iowa Water Center will conduct research to develop and apply models to predict nutrient retention and selected ecosystem services provided by water quality wetlands in Iowa. The Center will develop dynamic models of wetland nutrient removal that will simulate the removal of nitrogen under differing flow and nutrient loading conditions as determined by the various wetlands. The wetland models will be driven primarily by estimated hydrologic and nutrient loads derived from one or several suitable, and appropriately parameterized and validated, rainfall-runoff models of each wetland’s upslope contributing area. Several options for simulating loads from the catchments of selected wetland systems, including distributed numerical watershed models, empirical or semi-empirical rainfall-runoff models, and combinations of these will be explored.
