Project Summary: Existing at the nexus of streams and uplands, buffer strips provide a wide variety of ecosystem services - most notably improvement in water quality. This is done through removal of sediment, phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and other pollutants from runoff from nearby uplands, subsurface water, or floodwaters. Buffer strips also prevent sediment and sediment-bound P from entering streams by stabilizing streambanks and preventing streambank erosion.
