Occurrence of Coal-Tar Based Pavement Sealant Related PAHs in Urban Streambed Sediments in Main

Institute: Maine
USGS Grant Number: G16AC00144
Year Established: 2016 Start Date: 2016-05-01 End Date: 2017-12-31
Total Federal Funds: $18,777 Total Non-Federal Funds: Not available

Principal Investigators: John Peckenham

Project Summary: While it is acknowledged that there is a preponderance of scientific evidence in other parts of the US on the link between coal-tar-based pavement sealants and PAHs in the environment, there is a general lack of scientific data in Maine and other New England states. The purpose of this investigation is to conduct a study of selective urban streams in Maine for the presence of PAHs having a coal-tar-based sealcoat source and to begin to provide scientific evidence specific to Maine.
