Project Summary: The mission of the South Dakota Water Resources Institute (SDWRI) is to provide leadership and coordination with respect to water resource issues in agricultural production and the natural environment. The SDWRI will accomplish its mission by participating in and funding research, training, service and public education. The SDWRI recognizes the complexity of issues and broad range of constituencies and will seek to involve relevant faculty and staff at South Dakota State University and other related education institutions and agencies across the state. The SDWRI focuses on addressing local, state and regional water problems and issues and seeks to develop and provide research-based information for benefit of the citizens and industry of South Dakota. Funds are additionally used to support the SDWRIs annual competitive grant program as made available under the Water Resources Act of 1984 as amended and ongoing programs. The Information Transfer Program includes public outreach, active participation in the annual Dakotafest, steering committee representation and active involvement in the Big Sioux Water Festival and in the Eastern South Dakota Water Conference, interactions with extension specialists and local, state and federal agencies, participation and presentations at regional and national conferences, youth education, adult education and university student training and education. Also, water quality interpretation is provided by the SDWRI and its collaborators for livestock producers, irrigators, homeowners and others. Publications, such as pamphlets, educational materials, reports and peer-reviewed journal entries, are made available in paper and electronic formats through the SDWRIs website and are designed to support the SDWRI mission.
