Project Summary: This research proposes to implement a catalytic and cell immobilization process utilizing Mn(III, IV) oxide coated sand in batch and continuous flow laboratory studies to evaluate the capability of Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria to utilize the oxidation products of humic acid and remove/control Mn(II). The results of the proposed study could potentially serve as the basis for an innovative drinking water treatment process for the removal/control of both manganese and natural organic matter. Such a system could also eliminate the frequent need to replace or regenerate adsorbents (such as granular activated carbon), or use of a chemical oxidants to regenerate manganese greensand.
