A coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical modeling approach to understand if in-stream depositional zones are a carbon source or sink to the atmosphere

Institute: Kentucky
Year Established: 2010 Start Date: 2010-03-01 End Date: 2011-02-28
Total Federal Funds: $4,500 Total Non-Federal Funds: $9,008

Principal Investigators: James Fox

Project Summary: The objectives of the proposed research are to formulate an accurate coupled model that accounts for in-stream biogeochemical process and sediment flux. Field data will be collected for model calibration. Laboratory studies will also be conducted to gather data on possible reactions that may occur in-stream. The calibrated model will be applied to answer questions surrounding hydrologic sediment transport, carbon and nitrogen decomposition, and biological growth rates in the investigated watersheds.
