Project Summary: In the overall 10-year program, scientists from New Mexico State University, Texas A&M, and U.S. Geological Survey, and state agencies and organizations will work together, and in collaboration with Mexico, to collect and evaluate new and existing data to develop high-quality, comprehensive groundwater quantity and quality information and groundwater flow models for selected priority binational aquifers associated with New Mexico as authorized under the US-Mexico Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Act. The NM WRRI will administer the non-USGS New Mexico activities of this program for the selected Mesilla Basin aquifer. Task 1: an assessment team will provide the committee with accomplishments from years 1&2 and coordinate year 3 activities; T2: The NM/Chihuahua groundwater studies bibliography will be updated and annotated. The Mexican cooperators will contribute relevant studies for Mexico with the intent of producing a joint international publication. T3: a plan will be developed for updating, revising, and extending the Mesilla Basin hydrogeologic framework model and draft updated version will be prepared; T4: review and evaluate the existing groundwater flow models for use in the transboundary assessment and their potential for expansion into Mexico. T5: establish GIS and database for the Mesilla Basin. Data from U.S. and Mexico will be compiled into a geospatial database.
