Abstract: Despite the need for secrecy about specific measures being taken, public confidence would be bolstered through increased understanding of the nature and degree of threats to water supplies and the steps that can be taken to guard against threats associated with terrorist activity. The proposed research will examine how Delaware and other states in the mid-Atlantic region are addressing the challenge of protecting water supplies from such actions. In particular it will examine the extent of variation of security measures and standards between states. The specific objectives are: (1) describe the types of water supplies and the number of people served; (2) Assess the general nature of threats to water supply by type of supply; and (3) Identify steps that have been taken by the federal and state governments as well as by water suppliers themselves to secure the safety of water supplies
