Project Summary: A new research project replaces 2001FL4381, Dynamics of Tidal Marsh Plant Communities as a function of Changes in Freshwater Inflows and Tidal Inundation Time in the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. The new research project will supplement and enhance an ongoing project in which two numerical groundwater flow models for north-central Florida are being developed for the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD). These models will represent the surficial aquifer system and the Floridan aquifer system, which consists of the upper and lower Floridan aquifers. A steady-state model will be developed first, and then a transient model will be developed utilizing the results of the first model. The impacts that groundwater pumping will have on aquifer water levels will be determined for present (1995) conditions and for projected conditions in 2020. In these models, the surficial aquifer will be an active layer, and thus it will be possible to determine the impacts that pumping (most of which is from the upper Floridan aquifer) will have on the water table as well as on upper Floridan aquifer water levels. The groundwater models will be used by SJRWMD for resource planning and management and making regulatory decisions.
