Converting Documents to html

  1. Save the Word document, EarthScienceWeek2001quiz.doc, back to your computer.
  2. Save as html (web document).
  3. Where the MS Office filter for exporting to HTML has been installed, you will have an additional File option, "Export To", with sub-option "Compact HTML". Save to a slightly different name.
  4. Compare the file sizes.
  5. Use Page Valet to validate each of them.
  6. How many errors does each document have?
  7. How many lines of html are there in each file? (Page Valet will tell you)

If you have time, try to fix the html document which is in better shape so that it has no errors.

If you STILL have time, check the Cascading Style Sheet definitions using CSSCheck. What would need to be done to make this document follow the recommendations made in this course? (hint: proportional fonts)

You can see how poor the html quality is for the standard "SaveAs HTML" option, for even a very simple document; imagine what is produced for a complicated document.
