Scientist Emeritus Program |
Introduction and Program Goals
The Scientist Emeritus Program has been an important component of the Water Research Discipline since it was established as part of the Volunteer for Science Program in 1986. This memorandum outlines the guidelines for the USGS Scientist Emeritus program. This program provides retired scientists the opportunity to continue their research and to contribute their time and wisdom to enhance the science of the USGS, and the Nation, on a volunteer basis. The program is part of the Volunteer for Science Program, as defined in Chapter 500.23 of the Survey Manual and the Volunteer for Science Handbook.
Benefits to the USGS
A Scientist Emeritus can contribute to the Bureau and the NRP by:
- completing products,
- continuing scientific investigations,
- maintaining specialized scientific expertise that is of long-range importance to the USGS and the Nation,
- investigating science research frontiers that have potential future importance to the Nation,
- providing seasoned counsel to managers, individual scientists, and Discipline teams,
- conducting or participating in projects that require specialized scientific perspectives or knowledge and that supplement and enhance normal USGS activities, such as pursuing outreach efforts or serving as advisory staff,
- enhancing the institutional memory, and
- providing a historical perspective on the NRP and hydrologic science within the federal government.
Benefits to the Scientist Emeritus
Those accepted as volunteers under the program shall be able to continue their research and collaborations with colleagues and will have the title Scientist Emeritus. Additionally, in coordination with the NRP Branch Chief, a Scientist Emeritus may have use of USGS office and lab space, associated support requirements, and a moderate amount of operational funds.
Application Procedure
NRP scientists can request Scientist Emeritus status by submitting an Individual Services Volunteer Agreement form (9-2080) to the Chief Scientist fo r Hydrology through the Branch Chief, along with a brief (1-2 pages) proposal outlining the following general areas:
- Research topic to be addressed as a Scientist Emeritus
- Research objectives, work plan, and products envisioned
- Other non-research science activities planned
- Resources needed
