Planned

•   CD-ROM of trend analysis procedures (2002-2003)

This project is an extension of the WCP-Water workshop Detecting Changes in Hydrological Data that was held in Wallingford, U.K. from 2 to 4 December 1998. It is designed to facilitate the expanded use of trend analysis in hydrology. The CD-ROM will contain non-proprietary statistical software for determining trend ; detailed documentation of the statistical routines (including mathematical formulae, appropriate uses and limitations of each routine, and a sample application of each routine) ; a sample data set with outputs resulting from the use of each routine, to verify that the programme is running correctly on each user’s computer ; and a reference list that includes commercial software packages that use the procedures contained on the CD-ROM.

•   Regional and global analysis of hydrological change (2002-2003)

Another extension of the WCP-Water workshop Detecting Changes in Hydrological Data is an analysis of hydrological trends on rivers subject to minimal human influence.  This investigation will be the first to evaluate climate-related hydrological trends in a comprehensive and systematic manner globally.  Regional FRIEND coordinators and the GRDC are providing relevant data and information for the selection of appropriate rivers, and to assist in the analysis.  Member States of UNESCO and WMO may be requested to supplement the available information where necessary to ensure adequate data coverage.  The project is a joint undertaking of the UNESCO and WMO Secretariats.

•   Expert meeting on climate-related natural disasters and hydrological extremes in vulnerable basins (2002)

The purpose of this meeting is to assess indications of change in the frequency and magnitude of climate-related natural disasters and hydrological extremes, in selected basins having vulnerable populations.  The output of the meeting may form the basis for subsequent studies aimed at detecting regional patterns of natural disasters, extreme hydrological events, and possible common generating mechanisms.

•   Workshop on indices and indicators of climate and related hydrological variability and change (2003)

This workshop is designed to assess existing approaches to (indicators of) hydroclimatic variability and change, particularly in the context of river basin and resident population vulnerability.  The planned output is a technical report specifying existing indices and indicators, along with recommendations for their use in water resources and related applications.

Future

•   Conceptual study of climate, water and health (2003-2004)

Assess the state of knowledge regarding this subject area for the purpose of identifying critical needs for, and tractable approaches to, collaborative research.

•   Workshop on climate, water and risk management in agricultural practices (2004)

Develop a substantive understanding of the applicable tools for farm-based risk management at both the shorter-term weather-related scale, and at the longer-term scale of hydroclimatic variability.
