The Mode and Dimensions pane is on the PEST Properties dialog box under Control Data.
The data specified on the Mode and Dimensions pane is described in sections 4.2.3 and 4.2.4 of the PEST User Manual Part I. More extensive descriptions of these variables are in the PEST user manual.
RSTFLE: PEST can create binary files that allow it to save data to files so that if it is halted, it can be restarted from the point at which it was halted. If this checkbox is checked, such files will be saved and it will be possible to restart PEST at the point at which it was interrupted.
PESTMODE: PEST can be run in one of four modes estimation, prediction, regularization, and Pareto (PEST User Manual Part I, section 3). Regularization is selected by default.
•In estimation mode, it works to find a set of parameter values that improves the fit between observed and simulated values.
•In prediction mode (PEST User Manual Part I, section 8), PEST maximizes or minimizes a single simulated value while maintaining an acceptable model calibration.
•In regularization mode (PEST User Manual Part I, section 9), parameter estimation is modified by incorporating constraints on the parameter values using Tikhonov regularization.
•In Pareto mode (PEST User Manual Part I, section 13), PEST varies the weight applied to measurement and regularization objective functions to allow the user to assess how different weightings affect model outcome.
MAXCOMPDIM is an optional variable that can be used to activate compression of the Jacobian matrix. Compression is activated if MAXCOMPDIM is greater than 1. (Pest User Manual Part 1, sections 4.2.4 and 15.4). Activating compression of the Jacobian matrix can slow PEST down but it may also allow PEST to be used with models containing a vary large number of parameters.
DERZEROLIM is used in conjunction with MAXCOMPDIM. If Jacobian matrix compression is activated, DERZEROLIM is used to identify elements of the Jacobian matrix that are so small that they can be ignored. Any element of the matrix whose value is less than DERZEROLIM will be treated as having a value of zero.
