PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IL) Localized Flash Flooding - Chicago Area

Summary: Locally heavy rains (up to 6 inches in 3 hours) has resulted in flash flooding across parts of the northern Chicago metropolitan area.

Locally heavy rains has resulted in flash flooding in parts of McHenry, Lake, Cook, and DuPage Counties in Illinois. The near northwest suburbs of Chicago were the hardest hit. Flash flooding resulted in several road closures in the area, during peak morning travel times. Rainfall amounts approached 6 inches during a 3 hour period early this morning. Some streamgages in urban areas experienced 6 - 7 ft increases in stage over a 3 - 4 hour period. The local USGS office has field crews in the area. USGS has also been in contact with the local NWS office.
