All text within an HTML document should be surrounded by an appropriate tag; Leave no text untagged!

Pre Formated Text
To display text in which all the spacing is preserved and in which all the characters align in columns like an old computer printout, use PRE tags.

           by html.                --all spacing is preserved
</pre>

Except for the contents of PRE (pre-formatted) elements, only one consecutive space is recognized and line breaks are treated as spaces. The appropriate display of tabs is not defined in html.

Block Quotes

The BLOCKQUOTE element is used to indicate a section of quoted text, and is commonly indented.
