Surface Water Information--Data Scripts

This script is not yet supported (and may never be), but is provided in the interim because many users may find it valuable. Questions about this script should be referred to the script author. The status of the script is noted.

Name:
sendrat - email cooperators/interested parties notifications of shift/rating changes and provide access to a current shifted rating table.

Information:

This utility sends cooperators or other interested parties a notification that a rating or shift has changed at a station of interest and provides them with access to a current shifted rating table both directly in the email and via a link to a pdf rating table.

Program summary:

Sends email to either built-in WSC lists of email addresses or user-specified email addresses alerting recipients to a shift or rating change at the station.
Triggers a retrieval of changed shifts/ratings to the rating depot if user is a member of nwweb group.
Email includes a text shifted rating table as part of the email (which may not display well depending on the email system used by the recipient).
Also outputs a pdf shifted rating table to a server-specific output directory that should be set up for web display – script set up is geared towards a /var/ftp/pub area that routinely syncs files to the enterprise ftp server (ftpext.cr.usgs.gov). Email will include a link to that file.

: No command-line options are currently supported – user will be prompted for required information.

Requirements:

A directory must be setup on the NWIS server to allow some sort of web display of the output pdf rating. Directories and files contained in /var/ftp/pub on most NWIS machines should likely already be setup to automatically transfer to the ftpext.cr.usgs.gov enterprise ftp server to easily do this. SA/IT support staff should be consulted for their preferred way of accomplishing this and to obtain the settings that will need to be added to the sendrat script (output directory and base URL where the data users can access the files).
Ascii2pdf must be installed on your NWIS server (installed as part of Auto_Review/Swreview, so it should be available on all NWIS machines…).
Users must be a normal ADAPS user with at least ADAPS read access (nwar).

Known Problems/Limitations/Need Improvements:

Only 5 built-in email lists are currently offered. This can be easily increased if needed – just request the change from walker@usgs.gov.
The OR WSC has added an option to include a message from the user in the email detailing the cause of the shift/rating change. Option hasn’t been tested by the author but is working for OR and is available by request.
Current script setup is geared towards file transfer to the ftpext server. If you wish to set up pdf rating table web display from a local webserver, please contact the author for some simple modifications that should improve the setup for that option.
User will get an email with an error similar to the following reported: /bin/ksh[2]: /tmp/sendrat_temp_walker: not found. Error is inconsequential and can be ignored.

Installation:

Download and unzip the file to your NWIS server.
Open the file in a UNIX text editor (don’t use a Windows editor unless it supports UNIX output!) and edit the “outdir=”, “webdir=”, “list#text=”, and “emailadd#=” settings near the top of the script as explained directly within the script.
Make executable (chmod +x sendrat).
Run by typing ‘sendrat’. You will be prompted for everything.
