Name:
Rtshiftplot - Utility to quickly review current shifted ratings being used at real-time sites.
Information:
As current shift-adjusted ratings for all real-time sites are now downloaded by the Corps of Engineers, National Weather Service, and potentially other cooperators and/or the public through a national ratings depot (see OSW memo http://water.usgs.gov/admin/memo/SW/sw05.01.html), it is more important than ever to ensure that shifted ratings are appropriate over the entire range of stage. This script assists in that effort by providing a utility to quickly review all the current ratings for the real-time sites for a District.
As the script runs, it steps through each real-time site, first plotting the current V-diagram and then the shift-adjusted rating. . Each plot is displayed for a certain length of time as specified by the user before automatically moving to the next site. The graphics are somewhat crude (gnuplot) but very fast. They are suitable for identifying things such as open-ended shifts, straight shifts, shifts causing kinks to the rating, or shifts crossing the zero line. The ratings are always plotted with zero offset so they are not necessarily useful for evaluating overall rating or shift shape. Measurements are not shown.
The ratings plotted are taken from the tarred and zipped file that NWISWeb retrieves by cron each evening for sending to the national depot. A copy of this file is available on each local NWIS machine.
Installation:
- Download and unzip the file to your NWIS server
- Make executable (chmod +x rtshiftplot)
- Run by typing 'rtshiftplot' You will be prompted for the length of time in seconds to view each plot.
