Name:
meas_summary - Create a summary of measurement counts and types.
Information:
This script creates summary files that document the frequency and type of measurements being made for a group of stations. It can be run on an entire database or a file of sites, and on a single water year or a range of water years. Two files are created for each site file used.
meas_summary.XXXX.YYYY.FILE.out.txt
Where
- XXXX is the starting water year of the summary
- YYYY is the ending water year of the summary
- FILE is the name of the site file used (or CompleteDV if automatic site retrieval option used)
This file contains a summary for the entire period and by water year of the measurements made.
The following are provided:
Measurement Frequency Information
- minimum number of measurements
- maximum number of measurements
- average number of measurements
- total number of measurements
- days of flow
- days of flow per measurement
- measurements per year of flow
- total check measurements
- percentage of check measurements
Channel Information
- the percent of channels by type (wading, boat, remote-control boat, ice, bridge, cable, and other)
- the percent of channels by method (mechanical, ADCP, mid-section ADCP, ADV, indirect, weir/flume/volumetric, and estimate/dye-trace)
meas_summary.XXXX.YYYY.FILE.stations.out.txt
This file contains a the same fields, but on a per station/water year basis in an large (and wide) table. No summary for the entire period is included.
In interpreting the results, the number of measurements per year of flow are usually better to look at than number of measurements per year as the per year of flow numbers account for seasonal/ephemeral sites that won't have many measurements entered each year. Note that zero flow measurements aren't counted, daily values of zero are not counted, and stations without at least 15 days of flow aren't counted (In part this prevents a station with one measurement and one day of flow from biasing numbers high by being interpreted as having 365 measurements per year of flow.)
Usage:
The program can be run interactively or via a command line option. To run interactively, simply type "meas_summary" and answer the prompts. The user will be prompted to enter the starting water year, the ending water year, and the site list(s). Two possible site list sources are allowed, (a) the user can provide a site list in one or more tab delimited files containing the site ID and discharge DD, or (b) the script can create its own site list from all those with a primary discharge DD that has a complete period of daily value record for the year in question.
Usage from the command line is as follows:
Arguments are optional and if missing will be prompted for. A site file can be generated from all current realtime sites using the auto_control_builder script from swreview.
