For Internal USGS Access Only

Web pages

Note: Policies and guidelines for Professional Pages can be found at https://profile.usgs.gov/Policy.pdf (PDF).

Before you design a web page for your project, see the "toolbox" at http://water.usgs.gov/usgs/www.html for the latest USGS requirements (they get refined or change periodically) and for some useful links.

A few easy but basic things to check:

  • Be sure that you include the USGS logo at the top of your pages - and that you provide a link from your banner to the USGS public site (http://www.usgs.gov/).
  • Include alternate text for any images (pictures, graphs, etc.)
  • Footer information should contain "U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey", contact information, links to the USGS privacy statement (http://www.usgs.gov/privacy.html) and disclaimer (http://www.usgs.gov/disclaimer.html), last-modified date, and the page url (for those who might print out your pages).
  • Provide links back to your home page from secondary pages.

Prior to publishing your web page as a "public" page, you should get approval of your branch chief.

As you know, there is a web page for each NRP project maintained by this office. If you create a web page for your project that will be accessible as a USGS public page, please send the url to Linda Friedman (lcfried@usgs.gov) so that we can add a link to it. Also please provide a link from your web page to the NRP home page (http://water.usgs.gov/nrp/).

The web page we maintain provides a very brief description of your project, and a ten year bibliography. Many of the bibliographic citations have links to abstracts or publications. Material for these links has been obtained in a variety of ways - by searching the internet, from electronic material supplied by the author, or by typing the abstract from a hard copy. If you have an electronic form of the entire paper (e.g. a pdf file), we can easily put a link to it - BUT some journals consider their pdf FORMAT to be copyright protected even though, as Federal employees, USGS retains the copyright of the material. If you have an electronic version of an article that is in the format published by a journal, you should request permission from the journal to "publish" it on USGS web pages. For your convenience, you can start with the draft letter and modify it to request permission of the journal in question. Once you get permission to publish, please send via email either the electronic version of the article itself or, if you have put it on the web, send the url to lcfried@usgs.gov.
