INTERNAL USGS ACCESS ONLY

NSF Fast Lane

Internal Requirements.

Those seeking to obtain funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for reserach proposals must first comply with the provisions of Survey Manual Chapter 500.19 , Contributions and Grants to USGS from Outside Sources, including the USGS Form 9-3090, Grant Sponsor Information Profile Form.

NSF-Fastlane. NSF will only accept funding proposals through its web-based system, Fastlane:

https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/fastlane.jsp

In order to access Fast Lane you must be registered and acquire a PIN number.  Lorri Bogart is the USGS registrar.  Anyone wishing to use the system should send an e-mail to lbogart@usgs.gov requesting registration.   You will be notified by return e-mail once your registration is complete.

Once into Fast Lane you must provide an NSF Institutional ID Number.  This ID number is required by NSF and relates to the location where funds have been awarded.  The following numbers should be used:

                                HQ/Eastern Region  -  4100566000

                                Central Region   -  4100574000

                                Western Region    -  4100582000

When a USGS employee is working as co-investigator with a university, they will need to know the NSF Institutional ID Number assigned to USGS.  Some universities may also require the USGS Employer Identification Number (EIN) or USGS Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), which is the same number 53-0196958.

Fastlane is designed for use by universities and for this reason requires that proposed research projects be submitted by a university's Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) to insure the proposal and associated budget has been reviewed and approved. USGS does not have an OSR. For this reason, you should have your research proposal submitted by a university's OSR. If you are not working with a university, you will need to have someone in your organization who is assigned budget approval authority in Fastlane review your application and associated budget and submit it to Fastlane.

If you have any technical questions on business arrangements to be funded all or in part by the National Science Foundation, please contact Louie Pectol at (703) 648-6616.
