Re: NWIS enhancements needed

Charlie,

A possible agenda item for the ITAC mtg in Rapid City:   QW Updates to NWISWeb

I've cc'ed Sandy, Nelson, and Susan so they can comment, yea or nay.

Re: NWIS enhancements needed

Bill and Janice,

Very succinct and sounds accurate to me. Janice, did Terry respond with any corrections?

Could bubble the issue up through ITAC, and I can ask Charlie to put it on the agenda. I guess the intermediate goal here, is to convince the QW Users Group (Terry is the Chair) to raise the priority and timetable for resolving the two issues; I assume that the NWIS QW programmers would then comply with the user group priorities. If that is the case, and yet Terry sees other issues as higher priority, then I guess "we" need a dialogue with the QW Users Group to try to resolve viewpoints. The ESC and the ITAC could engage the QW User Group in that dialogue, separately or jointly.

Bob may have some insights, here, too.

I did find this older status/statement on the NWIS Web site:   http://ok.water.usgs.gov/nawqa/phoenix/agg/summary.html

Scott--Any comments on these statements? I thought I would take them forward at the next NWIS ESC meeting. May also want to consider taking them to ITAC to "bubble up." What do you think?

Bill

Bill, here are rough draft statements you wanted from the science retreat. If you need more specific information, I can get it from Terry Schertz. Let me know. Thanks.

Terry, did I say anything wrong here? Thanks for any corrections.

  1. One of the highest priority enhancements for WQ to the NWIS data base is the ability to update from the District data base to the national data base at any time. Cooperators often cite the fact that we cannot serve WQ data quickly enough to be useful to them. Currently, updates are done once a year for all previously approved data for all Districts. The update requires a manual update by the NWIS team. Automating the update process requires some new software to handle changes and deletions from previously stored values.
  2. Many Districts are now serving real time WQ data on the web. ADAPS checks to delete clearly erroneous values have been improved recently for serving gage heights and discharges. A similar effort to check for erroneous values for WQ parameters needs to be done so that USGS real time WQ data do not show these clearly bad values to the public and our cooperators.
