IT Security Awareness Course Status Update - 2/28/2005 |
To: All USGS DOIU ITSEC Awareness Course FY05 Beta Testers and FY04 Administrative
Account Holders and Selected Additional Interested Parties
cc: Acting CIO and Regional GIOs, Information Security Team (BITSM), DOI Departmental
IT Security Manager, DOI NBC Course DBA, DOI NBC ITSEC Course Facilitator
Since my last formal update to you on 2/10/2005, I can report the following
updates with regard to the DOIU IT Security Awareness training as they relate
to USGS. These updates are based on very recent discussions with the DOI
NBC.
The following issues are still outstanding:
1) Full functionality in the administrative tool is not expected until March
4th. (An NBC developer has been out with the flu.)
(This functionality, to be permitted to a very limited number of accounts (e.g.,
up to two per region), includes the ability to add or remove other "sub-bureau" admin
accounts, change their passwords, mark student records as complete (with a
reasons drop-down box), mark student records as excluded (with a reasons drop-down
box). Update authority would be appropriately scoped to each region.)
2) A filter needs to be put in place to filter away the National Biological
Survey from department-wide "ALL" query results as well as any and
all old, now inactive organizations.
3) Research is underway by NBC to resolve a network issue with users' course
screens freezing in the course, or "page cannot be displayed" messages
occurring, or images not showing up - they hope to have the problem(s) identified
within the next week or so.
In lieu of the ability to provide the ability for a large number of USGS personnel (Cost Center Chiefs and beyond) to check on course completion status by virtue of being part of a DOI-wide intranet, NBC is providing a single USGS account facilitating anonymous read-only access to the course database. (Additional detail: This will a sub-bureau account with read access to all sub-bureaus.) As a by-product, this will eliminate the need to maintain separate, read-only accounts, currently numbering somewhere around two dozen, in the Survey. A separate, formal mailing to USGS Cost Center Chiefs is planned. As recipients of this e-mail status update, you are on the bleeding edge. (No surprise to you, no doubt <smile>.)
The address for checking all FY05 course completions is:
http://www.nbc.gov/itsecurity/admin/
Credentials to access the web site will be provided separately after a technical matter is resolved with DOI.
A number of people that have taken the course have received a score of 67%. This is said to have been the result of having completed the third post assessment, but not then clicking on the "next" button. The course software developer (of the course engine and template) has been asked to address this.
In the area of DOIU customer service:
- More lines have been added to the DOIU help desk phone system
- There should be no more bounced e-mail; unlimited capacity was added
- An additional staff member was added
- The help desk was instructed to never tell users to start all over after
having spent a reasonable amount of time in completing the course
DOI has reiterated their promise to follow through on ensuring that all course beta testers receive full credit for having completed the FY05 training. I have supplied a fresh list to DOI NBC.
My thanks again to all of you for all your support and efforts in this area.
- Roy
