The Kansas District is particularly and significantly impacted by the demise
of AIS. Could you contact Walt Aucott to discuss FY 2003 funding as you
project/guesstimate it at this point in time? Thanks.

Leo would like to add BASIS+/AIS to the ITAC agenda, to discuss the
mitigation of these and other related issues.

I can supply my best answers, but none of these are 'official' because we,
(the AIS folks), haven't received many answers to our questions/concerns.
First I'll summarize what we consider to be the issues, and then respond to
your 4 specific questions.
FFS and BASIS was chosen as the "Common Financial and Project Information Systems."
(Directors memo, June 13, 2000)
We see the AIS/BASIS+ issues falling into 4 categories:
- Functionalities existing in AIS within the scope of Financial and Project
Information that WILL be included in BASIS+.
- Functionalities existing in AIS within the scope of Financial and Project
Information that will NOT be included in BASIS+.
- Functionalites in AIS that are outside the scope of Financial and Project
Information that will NOT be included in BASIS+, and will be lost with
the demise of AIS.
- Historical data in AIS that will NOT be moved to BASIS+ and will be
lost with the demise of AIS.
From the information we've received, the Bureau plan is for all discipline
systems to go away, whether or not their existing Project, Financial or
Other functionalities will be replaced by FFS/BASIS+. We have put together
a listing of existing functionalities that will be lost when AIS goes away,
which include your concerns plus additional ones.
My best responses for your specific questions:
- Registering users for the Lotus Domino servers. -- This will be done
manually through the Lotus Notes Registration and Modification Center, the
way all other disciplines currently register users.
- Organization Structure / WRD Phone Directory -- This functionality
will no longer exist because AIS is the only repository for these
'non-official' Organization Structures. BASIS+ and Lotus will only use
the official FPPS Organization Codes.
I'm not aware that Lotus has the existing functionality to build web
directories based on the official Org Code, or has any plans to add this.
The question would need to be addressed to the Bureau Lotus team,
(GS_Imp@usgs.gov).
- Registering users in T&A and Travel Manager - same as question 1. --
These will be done manually for each system. All Bureau employees will be
moved to the web-based version of the T&A system when it is ready and
available. I'm not aware of any automated registration process to the
web-based T&A system. That question would need to be addressed to the
Bureau Payroll team, (ask_hro@usgs.gov).
- Applications that verify Unix users / AIS employees / non-USGS employees
-- Once the AIS interface to Lotus is gone, we do not know whether the Lotus
team will continue to supply WRD with the file that is used for creating the
users.rdb file, used for the search_id (sid) function.
My understanding of the BASIS+ design is that it will only include valid
employees from FPPS, so WRD would also lose access to all the former USGS
employees that are currently maintained in AIS.
The Oct 01, 2002 date is based on the scheduled time-frame for the BASIS+ implementation,
which is Release 1 in May 2002, and Release 2 in Oct 2002. However, we will continue to
maintain and support AIS and all associated functionalities until told that we are no
longer allowed to provide this support.

Mindy,
The email below raises some good questions, most of which have been raised, but not really
answered by the bureau. The party line from the bureau is that AIS should go away on 10/1 but
as we have discussed, I'm not sure how that can happen and still have WRD function. Do you
have any info that you can relay in response to the 4 questions raised in the email below?

Scott, these are pertinant questions. I have sent them on per your suggestion. I too have
heard that AIS will be shut down come 10/1 - but we clearly need access to the info in the
system. To remove AIS from our servers would be a disaster. -Leo.

Although I have not heard "Official" word that AIS will be leaving us at
the beginning of next FY, several people here (CR Research) have attended
Basis+ training and indicated that AIS might be going away. There are
several things I use the AIS database for and that WRD uses it for. I am
wondering how I might re-write my applications as well as the future of
other general purpose applications that are tied to AIS:
- How will we register users for the Lotus Domino servers?
- I currently use the Organizational Structure (Org Units in the AIS DB)
to build a CR Research address book nightly
(http://wwwbrr.cr.usgs.gov/brrcr_dir/html). Will this structure be
maintained somewhere (Maybe on the Domino servers available through
LDAP)?
- How will users be put into the T&A and Travel Manager systems?
- I run a program nightly that compares Unix users with AIS employees and
gives me a report on people that are not USGS employees:

Since AIS marks people for deletion but does not actually delete the person the
org_chief data is still available and I have a contact after a person leaves.
Also, Employees not in Research are identified to me when an AO deletes them
from AIS.
Will the info still be available to Unix hosts to allow me to do this after AIS
is gone.
