Meeting Notes

• 11:00 am -- Current status of SLEDS

• SLEDS Funding:
• SLEDS funding fell thru the cracks this year and last; funding continues to be an issue.
• Dan Gooding reports that funding from OSW last year was to be SV'ed to CVO and carried over in the last few days of the fiscal year, but CVO was unable to accept the funds due to inability to carryover the funds at the late date in the fiscal year.
• It was noted that Steve Blanchard submitted a request for end of year funds this year -- but this funding doesn't look probable.
• Additional SLEDS Functions needed (e.g. "Simple SLEDS," etc) are documented in "SLEDS 5 Design Meeting," prepared in March 2001, and provided to relevant parties.
• Mike Norris needs to know what will it cost to get the SLEDS software up and running for all the sediment labs. Answer: About $40k (plus overhead) would cover the March 5, 2001 function list. Need travel costs for testing at Iowa, Kentucky, and Missouri sediment labs. OSW and OWQ will join together to fund this activity.
• Mike Norris asks about the timeframe for implementation of all enhancements.
• Simple SLEDS is planned to be completed by September 27, 2002; which covers about 90% of functions on the March 5, 2001 list. The remainder can be completed by the end of December 2002.
• Dan Gooding is planning a SLEDS Port to Microsoft Windows -- scheduled for completion by December, 2002. Sandy advised that the port to Windows be a second priority, postponed until completing a beta test of the software developed to meet all the requirements defined in the March 5, 2001 document, including the forthcoming pipette requirements.
• Loren Kloft suggests that DIS cost recover for SLEDS.
• Mike Norris suggests that a part of each sediment sample billing be used to cost recover for SLEDS software.
• Mike Slifer suggests that SLEDS status be an agenda item for September ITAC meeting.
• Sediment labs in Iowa and Kentucky prefer to wait for an enhanced SLEDS until all the functions in place. This means that the enhancements must have requirements (for pipette and sedograph) documented by sediment labs; followed by coding and testing. The sediment lab personnel want to install the enhanced SLEDS after all functions are available; so they don't have to run two systems.
• One suggestion is to search for another programmer to code the pipette and sedograph functions. Programmer needs experience in Ingres, Windows for GL -- Open Road. Sandy discouraged use of a second programmer. Mike Norris pointed out that it may be a way to develop software portions concurrently. Scott McEwen suggests that Jeff Miller (Jeff may be available next FY) code the Iowa pipette function. Other suggestions were to contact Sandy Turner (NWQL) for a potential programmer.
• Dan Gooding agrees to accept responsibility for overseeing entire SLEDS development project.
• Sandy Williamson will help the SLEDS team (CVO, IA, KY, & MO) communicate SLEDS requirements and functionality using the Raindance cyber tool application sharing.

  Action Item (Jul2002.Cyber.1): Mike Norris - will assure that the SLEDS funding of $40K plus 20% overhead is available and transferred to CVO by two weeks.

  Action Item (Jul2002.Cyber.2): Kentucky and Iowa sediment labs personnel led by Loren Kloft - will supply Dan Gooding the SLEDS pipette requirements by August 15, to include an example input screen, output report, and equations.

  Action Item (Jul2002.Cyber.3): Dan Gooding - will schedule a SLEDS team conference call in late August to report on SLEDS enhancements status.

  Action Item (Jul2002.Cyber.4): CVO will set up a SLEDS test environment in KY, MO, and IA

  Action Item (Jul2002.Cyber.5): Scott McEwen - will review and update the GS-W SLEDS TS Lotus abbreviation to communicate the SLEDS enhancements. -- DONE

• GCLASS Status

• $75K GCLAS contract with ORKAND expires in August 2002. There is a need for another similar amount for continuing ORKAND contract (development plus maintenance) for the next six months until January, 2003. Will contract development and maintenance to be complete on January 2003. Will Koltun have adequate funding for development and maintenance that will inevitably be required after January 2003.
• OSW is funding Greg Koltun in the Ohio District for user requirements development training and user support.

  Action Item (Jul2002.Cyber.6): Isabelle Halley - will ask Greg Koltun for GCLAS funding and accomplishments status for both FY 02 and 03 (planned), and send to ITAC members.

• What was spent on GCLAS in FY2002? Include list of tasks and budget.
• What are the needs of GCLAS for FY2003? Include list of tasks and budget.

• DIS Funding of NT TAC, SUN TAC and Security Team

There was a meeting of the Regional Computer Specialists and the DIS this week in Reston. Tom Wood and Scott McEwen informed ITAC members of a proposal under development that will be sent to GIO, requesting FY03 funding for the NT TAC, SUN TAC, Network Services Team, and the Security Team. These 4 groups would be matrixed to the DIS and GIO in FY03, and would probably be fully transitioned to the GIO Office in FY04.

Scott suggested this action should fall under the NWIS umbrella. Katherine: The NWIS ESC discussed this and decided this was the responsibility of the 2 discipline offices. GCLASS will remain with the discipline offices.
