Status/Comments: The following Invitation sent To: Karen Siderelis,
Cc: Steve Blanchard, Charlie Merk, and Bill Carswell, on 01/31/2001, from Katherine Lins,
Acting Chief, OI
The USGS Water Resources Information Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC) would like to offer
an open invitation to you or a representative of your choice to visit any of their regularly
scheduled meetings. The ITAC has served to advise Water in information technology decisions and
in understanding the specific needs of the field-based water professional the technology serves.
As you may be aware, ITAC meetings are held quarterly at a different Water office location
throughout the country. This pattern has been adopted to meet our charter requirement for
maintaining contact with grass-roots computer users. In this way ITAC can identify and respond
to needs before they become large problems and also become aware of innovative computer
activities and applications that may be of general interest. A common element of each meeting
is an informal town-meeting session with all office staff invited to interact with ITAC
members.
The next meeting is the first week in May in Tennessee. I am happy to extend to you this
invitation as well as to offer you the assistance of any ITAC member. We are justly proud of
the ITAC and its conduit for information and would want you to take advantage of the opportunity
it affords you as you develop your IT management plan.

St Paul
meeting 5/16-18/2000
|
Person(s) Assigned: Lew Wade, Graig McHendrie,
Tom Wood, Loren Kloft, Scott McFarlane, & Greg Shank
Description of Action Item: To have a teleconference next week (week of May 22)
to discuss the LOTUS Notes POP issues.
Status/Comments: Overcome by Events -- Related Documentation:
from Gloria J Stiltner, 05/30/00 (Subject: Lotus Notes of Interest, for LLMAs: POP and IMAP)
The POP3 protocol will continue to be available through September 30, 2000. Additionally, the
Implementation Team is assessing a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) implementation of IMAP. Over the coming
months, users should finish moving to the use of Lotus/Domino as their primary mail server using the
Lotus Client or Web based mail as their primary mail interface. The Implementation Team is also
exploring the advantages of providing a suite of mail protocols (including POP3 and IMAP) after
September 30, 2000 to provide a secondary method of access to user mail files. If as we near the
September target, we still don't see either an improved Notes browser client, or other alternative
Notes client solutions for our Unix users, we will make sure the POP capability stays operational...
even if the exploratory work has not been completed.
