Status/Comments: 1/29/2001 -- Bill Carswell talked with Mike Norris last week
regarding SLEDS. He agreed to have a meeting of the SLEDS programmer from CVO and the Kentucky and
Iowa Districts in an attempt to get functionality issues resolved. Bill Carswell gave Mike Norris
a copy of the SLEDS questionnaire results furnished by Loren Kloft and a copy of the John Grey email
forwarded to me by Scott McEwen.
Loren will get back to Bill Carswell in a couple of weeks on whether or not such a meeting has
taken place or is planned.

Description of Action Item: Steve Hammond & Tom will discuss the status and plans
for connectivity to the Outer Islands.
Status/Comments: Update from Tom Wood, 1/26/01 - Tom discussed the status and
plans for improved connectivity to the outer islands with Bob Wakelee. Bob said the USGS network folks are
looking into this but the cost could be prohibitive for such small offices. Bob discussed this with Carol
Lawson in Menlo Park. Carol said she will be attending the annual Hawaii Intranet Consortium meeting to
renew USGS agreement with DOD. This meeting with be held at the same time the Asia-Pacific network meeting
occurs. Therefore, there should be network personnel representing various groups from Guam and the
Marianas. Carol will see if she can establish contact with these folks and raise the issue. Carol will
let Bob know what is discussed and if any new options can be initiated.
Update from Carol Lawson, 3/28/2001: Gordon -- Since I last wrote, two more carriers have added
higher speed access (or are about to). In addition to the DSL service available from Startec, Guam net is
offering broadband (cable) service. ITE (Talaya) has announced that DSL will be available from them in
April. Based on the rapid changes, would you like to wait a little longer and see what plays out, or try
ordering service with one of the carriers now? Please advise. Thanks. -Carol
3/28/2001 - Just going back through the other recent notes on this-- the pricing looked pretty good--
I can't see how you would get much better than that pricing (unless those are teaser rates...-- that is,
quotes for lowest speeds since DSL is distance dependent). Anyway, my gut is that if they get DSL at a
reasonable rate NOW, they should start seriously looking into it, perhaps even try it out. At those
prices, it's hardly going to break anybody just to try it. My feeling on waiting is that there may be
lots of delays waiting for the others to ramp up. -Bob Waklee
3/28/2001 - Hi All, The prices that Carol has provided in earlier emails is this the cost per month,
for either 6 month term or a 1 year term. So if we tried DSL for 6 months, is the cost at $ 140.00 a
month or $ 140.00 for 6 months. Carol, the other carriers that have added higher speed access are their
rates about the same as Startec? - Leo
3/28/2001 - Leonora, Off the top of my head, I'd say it's $140 per month. I haven't obtained pricing
from the others, because I wasn't sure of your interest. Personally, I'd get information from all
carriers and prepare a comparison table (for availability, functionality, and cost). I'll be telecommuting
tomorrow and will be out of the office on Friday. I'll be in Reston all of next week, and will have little
time to read email (because I have evening meetings with other agency personnel, and all day meetings at
the Survey). If you wish, I can resume efforts when I return on April 9th. -Carol

"Infrastructure for Districts to serve maps" and see where the following programs stand:

horizon, then CPAC will invite Ken Lanfear to come to the next CPAC meeting to talk
about Gateway to the Earth.
A Gateway briefing document ahead of time would be important 2-weeks prior to the meeting so
educated questions could be asked. Also, invite Atlas, and EROS Data Center, and Enviromapper for
NWIS. CPAC needs to know if these programs are important to the
Districts. This will be submitted as an agenda item for the WRD Senior Staff Meeting.

(#13 & #33) Related to briefing Senior Staff about new technology and collaboration with the
geography discipline. Steve Hammond recommended that the topic be added to the January combined

Description of Action Item: Shawn Noble and Sun TAC will test NWIS and DISSPLA on Sun
Solaris 8 with the new Fortran compiler. Tom Wood will report the test results back to CPAC.
Status/Comments: E-mail message from Shawn Noble, 1/19/01 In January 2001,
Sun TAC began NWIS/DISSPLA testing, to be used as a basis for upgrading all WRD Sun servers from
Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 8. NWIS and Sun_TAC are working together to form a baseline of NWIS/DISSPLA
performance on the test machine at Solaris 2.6. They will make sure the test machine is running as
expected before upgrading it to Solaris 8. Once the Solaris 2.6 baseline testing is successful, the
test machine will be upgraded to Solaris 8 and the tests run again. If/when that test is successful,
Sun_TAC and NWIS will solicit sites (including sites managed by individual Sun TAC members) to upgrade
their machines. Once this beta testing is deemed successful, Solaris 8 and upgrade instructions
will be released to all sites. NWIS will perform the initial tests and beta tests using their PreVue.
As of 1/11/2001, the GW baseline tests had been completed.

this report topics into groups. Database and telecom futures are to be included. Suggested steps for
FUTCOM follow. Frame the state of computing in the water discipline to set the stage. Frame the premises.
Review issues of the AIT and prioritize. The team members would be led by Scott McEwen and would include
Greg Allord, Nelson Williams, and a GIS representative. Scott McEwen will draft a charge back to CPAC
within the thirty days.
