DATA CONFERENCE: (WORKSHOP)

  • Week of Sept 8-12, 2014 in Kansas City, Kansas
  • National data workshop hosted by CRACD.
  • Problems with hotels so conference is iffy at this point;
  • Haven’t heard anything in the last week or two (RAS). .
  • Deadline to register for permission to attend was June 10, 2014 at
  • https://obis.usgs.gov/SitePages/Reservations.aspx

LET'S DISCUSS:

  • STED’s presence at the conference??
  • Keynote speaker during plenary session
  • CARP team meeting / collaboration
  • STED Booth needed at conference ?
  • Attendance for conference vs. meeting
  • Webex for people that cannot attend in person?
  • Last f2f was a two day meeting (maybe meet for just 1 day depending on content/agenda)
Regional Water Data Workshop has 433 attendees registered on obis.usgs.gov right now. Hotel has not been determined yet. Still waiting on final approval.
Jerad has approved some funding ($750) for the non-headquarters representatives towards travel (So, that would be $750 each for: Jen, George, Greg, Pat, and Joe., however, I have been talking to the CRACD and WSFT Mark Smith to figure out a strategy.
*Looks like all persons that were not originally going to conference will have to be on separate travel to the face to face.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO REVIEW:

STED EMAIL- RESENT May 6th
To: All Water Mission Area Employees
From: Alan Ward, USGS Office of Organizational and Employee Development

Subject: Access to Training Links on the Scientific and Technical Employee Development (STED) Committee Website. The STED website can help you and your supervisor with planning your career development and training needs. As this is the mid-term performance appraisal and Individual Development Plan season, now is a good time to browse this website for training opportunities. This memo will help you find needed training, easily and efficiently.

As you may already know, the STED website is designed to provide Water Mission Area (WMA) employees with essential tools and resources for professional and technical development. The site contains links to USGS training pages, the USGS National Training Center, and the new National Data Committees’ website. A valuable link on the website is also available to view All Scheduled USGS Courses updated nightly in DOILearn. The STED recently added several external training links that provide affordable training solutions which will help the WMA to continue to maintain its high standards. A list of all available training each year can be found on the STED webpage, even if it’s not scheduled yet in DOILearn.

Your STED Committee is well represented by all segments of the WMA Members Its primary mission is to provide guidance, recommendations and tools for employee development (eg. training) for the WMA. Among other tasks, the STED works with the USGS Office of Organizational and Employee Development and our National Training Center to review and assess new and existing scientific and technical training programs and opportunities. For example, we facilitate the development of new Technology Enabled Learning (TEL) courses and blended learning opportunities, which help reduce travel and training costs. Distance delivery of training allows more employees to take advantage of science and technical developmental opportunities. Knowing the pressures that all bureaus are under to limit travel and other costs, it's even more important now to find alternative methods to help us maintain our technical and scientific knowledge and expertise.

If you have ideas for any alternative types of training development or additional training opportunities that might help support the WMA mission, please feel free to contact the STED Committee (gs-w-sted@usgs.gov).

RESULTS-

ON THE WEB PAGE:

  • Online Training http://water.usgs.gov/hydrotube/ links
  • COURSE CATALOG has been added to the STED page
  • George Sechen- working on other teleconferencing technology beside WebEx.
  • Working with Ralph to try using Adobe Connect
  • George: to post STED notes to SharePoint

NTC

  • Alan- update on RFP process.
  • Thanks to STED for reading through WMA proposals and participating! :) Until next Wednesday to submit to Alan, ~$50k

STED VOTE:

  • $5K to awarded WMA proposal
  • $10K to Aquarius for TEL development that may be used in WY14 and WY15

CARP Training – STED’s role?

  • JEN- Update- CARP is going to have on-line prerequisites. CARP are using TEL for the on-line classes and will likely be making a decision by the end of February.
  • 4/17/14- phone call update
  • CARP is using TEL for about 5-6 levels of users. Decisions to use TEL on 3 things has been made.
  • Pre-req for core users (hydrotechs, etc)- 4 modules and then participate in In-person training.
  • AQ Lite- people who only need to look at data (hydrologists, etc)- All Training for this group is done online 3-DBAs and LDMs- will likely take in- person core users training and have some post on-line TEL training.
  • They have created a TEL TEAM consisting of 4 members and I recommended that they include Tj in this process. I spoke with Tj and she is calling Chuck today.

CARP- Very rough timeline (which will be refined and added to the Plan):

  • Revised timelines (still in draft):
    • Last AQ build for USGS release: December 2014. (This reflects the addition of 1 more quarter of development.)
    • Testing for the release build: through early Jan 2015.
    • 2nd pilot installation: later January 2015.
    • Supertrainer train-the-trainer class - About the same time as 2nd pilot, or a little later. My team will be working hard to finalize the curriculum before then, but we'll train what we have and ask you all to assimilate tweaks as we need to make them.
    • 3rd pilot installation: March 2015.
    • Release starts: May or June 2015 Updated to AUGUST 31st.
    • Local expert training classes: for early deployment WSCs, just before roll-out; for later deployment WSCs, about halfway through roll-out.
    • NOTE that this is all still conjecture, but at least we are sure that deployment won't be in January 2015, as once stated.
    • 36 super trainers, learning curve with new lingo/terminology, quality of video and audio very good, Aquarius speak to tech speak, lot to do in next year

TEAM: Need input as far as continued webpage promotion and other ideas to promote new technology and learning.

WEB PAGES:

  • Suggestion: Go through the website every few weeks and click on links to ensure quality.
  • If you find any mistakes or outdated information, please send an email to Mike and Jen

ROUND ROBIN:

  • Please share ideas. OSW (Jim K)
  • OWQ (Stan) OGW (David)
  • OWI/NWIS (JimC) -
  • Pat
  • Cindy (NRP)- George Greg
  • Rod
  • Joe - SWAMI (electronic field form for s/w data collection) online training link http://water.usgs.gov/hydrotube/ (fantastic!) … online videos (high quality)
  • Jim C Jen
  • Alan - ADCP class coming up (agreed to stream it!)
  • Mike Ierardi- Stream Gagers Blog

OLD NEWS but still important-

  • Think about other TEL development? What classes need to be re-developed in TEL… revisit top 5 or 10 classes?
  • Streaming Memo- Sent by Jared to Water Mission Area leads (technical office chiefs, NRP, etc). Sent May 9, 2013 and resent 9/25/13. What has been the response?
  • Top 5-10 courses for redevelopment? (possible tele component); training needs analysis 70 water mission area
  • Hands on sampling course: hard to do via tele-conf/streaming … certain modules could be (2 week class) very expensive,
  • As we move into Aquarius classes going to need to be redeveloped, Surface Water Records Computation: well suited for blended (after Aquarius roll out ~2016), webcast/podcast during curricula development release date May/June 2015
  • SME : no cap for RFP
