What is SWAQ?

The Subcommittee on Water Availability and Quality (SWAQ) advises and assists the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainability (CENRS) on

related to the availability and quality of water resources of the United States within the context of the global hydrologic cycle. The SWAQ focuses on science issues and associated policy options related to research and improvements in technology to advance the goal of ensuring a safe and sustainable supply of water in the United States in order to preserve the capacity to support societal and ecological needs, particularly in the context of a changing climate.

The 2011 SWAQ charter [700KB PDF] explains more about the subcommittee's purpose and functions.

Over a dozen member agencies and departments make up SWAQ. The SWAQ also serves as an interagency forum on water resources to support CENRS.
