genscn(1) U.S. Geological Survey (wrdapp) genscn(1) NAME GenScn - GENeration and analysis of model simulation SCeNarios ABSTRACT Analyzing and managing the high volumes of input and output of complex river basin models is a major task. These models are used to simulate water quantity and quality for numerous scenarios of changes in land use, land-use management practices, and water- management operations. To assist with that process, an interactive computer program, GENeration and analysis of model simulation SCeNarios (GenScn), was developed to create simulation scenarios, analyze results of the scenarios, and compare scenarios. METHOD GenScn provides an interactive framework for analysis built around an established and adaptable watershed model. The graphical user interface (GUI) uses standard Windows 9x/NT components. The Hydrological Simulation Program--Fortran (HSPF) is used for simulating the hydrologic and associated water quality processes on pervious and impervious land surfaces and in streams and well-mixed impoundments. MapObjects LT from Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) is used to provide mapping functionality. HISTORY Version 1.0 1998/08/14 - Initial release. DATA REQUIREMENTS Meteorologic records of precipitation and estimates of potential evapotranspiration in a Watershed Data Management (WDM) file are required for watershed simulation. Air temperature, dew point temperature, wind, and solar radiation also are required for snowmelt. Air temperature, wind, solar radiation, humidity, cloud cover, tillage practices, point sources, and (or) pesticide applications may be required for water-quality simulation. Physical measurements and related parameters are required to describe the land area, channels, and reservoirs. If mapping is to be available, Geographical Information System (GIS) data in the form of ESRI shape files must be included. OUTPUT OPTIONS Output options include graphical and tabular display of both observed and simulated data. Output may be viewed interactively or written to files. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS For installation of GenScn, 60 megabytes of free disk space is 26 October 1998 1 genscn(1) U.S. Geological Survey (wrdapp) genscn(1) needed. To run GenScn, the following are necessary: - Windows 9x or Windows NT 4.0 or higher - 486 or greater processor, running at 50 megahertz or faster - 16 megabytes of memory - 60 megabytes of free disk space - display resolution of 1024x768 For optimal performance, the following are recommended: - Pentium processor, running at 200 megahertz or faster - 64 megabytes of memory - 100 megabytes of free disk space - display resolution of 1280x1024 - color printer DOCUMENTATION Kittle, J.L., Jr., Lumb, A.M., Hummel, P.R., Duda, P.B., Gray, M.H., 1998, A tool for the generation and analysis of model simulation scenarios for watersheds (GenScn): U.S. Geological Survey Water- Resources Investigations Report 98-4134, 152 p.
