Global Science and Data Network for Coastal Blue Carbon (SBC) Active
The Global Science and Data Network for Coastal Blue Carbon (SBC) brings together scientists from a wide range of disciplines. Our goal is to increase the accuracy of and confidence in local, regional, and global estimates of carbon cycle processes, fluxes, and storage as well as greenhouse gas emissions from coastal ecosystems, and to allow global access to quality controlled coastal ecosystem carbon data.
The Global Science and Data Network for Coastal Blue Carbon (SBC) was formed to in 2016 to bring together scientists from a wide range of disciplines. A significant advance has been the formation of the National Science Foundation-supported Coastal Carbon Research Coordination Network (CCRCN) Our goal is to increase the accuracy of and confidence in local, regional, and global estimates of carbon cycle processes, fluxes, and storage as well as greenhouse gas emissions from coastal ecosystems, and to allow global access to quality controlled coastal ecosystem carbon data. SBC consists of scientists, coastal management practitioners, and other data users with the goals of:
- Improving basic and applied science on carbon and greenhouse gas cycling in vegetated coastal ecosystems including basic science questions and science that addresses the immediate and future needs of policy, carbon accounting, and coastal management;
- Identifying priority research needs and geographies;
- Providing a mechanism for collecting and hosting a coastal carbon and greenhouse gas data archive for use by the science community, coastal practitioners and other data users;
- Building the capacity of coastal carbon stakeholders globally to collect and interpret high quality coastal carbon science and data.
SBC provides a foundation upon which the coastal carbon science, conservation, and management community will continue to build into the future. It will increase the accuracy of and confidence in local, regional and global estimates of carbon cycle processes, fluxes and storage as well as greenhouse gas emissions from coastal ecosystems, and allow global access to quality controlled coastal ecosystem carbon data.

USGS Blue Carbon Projects
Together with partner organizations, the USGS is involved in data collection, analysis, and synthesis to improve estimates of coastal wetland carbon fluxes. This research will help improve science and data availability across a wide range of topics.NASA-USGS National Blue Carbon Monitoring System
The NASA-USGS National Blue Carbon Monitoring System project will evaluate the relative uncertainty of iterative modeling approaches to estimate coastal wetland (marsh and mangrove) C stocks and fluxes based on changes in wetland distributions, using nationally available datasets (Landsat) and as well as finer scale satellite and field derived data in six sentinel sites.
