This is a set of digital maps of the boundaries of land use studies (LUS) and subunit surveys (SUS) conducted by the 1994 National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) study units. These coverages describe the sampling areas of the land use studies and subunit surveys, which represent two of the three ground-water study components of the National Water-Quality Assessment program. (The third ground-water component is the flow path studies).
The coverage naming convention is netcode_bnd (for example, LUSCR1_BND), or netcode_trg (for example LUSCR1_TRG.) The BND coverages represent the entire areal extent of the hydrogeologic unit defined for study. The TRG coverages represent the targeted land use within the overall area described by the BND coverage. The targeted land use coverage is supposed to nest within the overall boundary coverage, but this is not always the case.
Each coverage has an ascii metadata file named "covername.met" that contains information regarding that particular coverage.
The version dated 3/36/2001 is a minor update of the data set dated 4/25/2000 to make the coverage names consistent with sucodes. One coverage exists for each netcode. (See processing step for 3/26/2001.) Some are duplicates because the same boundary can describe more than one network.
The purpose of this data set is to describe the hydrogeologic units and predominant land uses that the NAWQA study units used for selecting wells for their ground water sampling networks.
The boundaries will be the basis for computing nationally consistent ancillary characteristics for the ground water studies, which will be used in the analysis of water quality data.
The NAWQA study units submitted these coverages in response to the data aggregation request for boundaries of land use studies and study unit surveys issued by the National Synthesis teams in spring 1999. The guidelines are available on the Internet at <URL:http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa-only/datareq/gwgis94c.html>.

The generic network tables containing network codes and descriptions that are needed to explain the networks are available at <URL:http://wwwidaho.wr.usgs.gov/nawqa/data.dictionary/table1.html>.
The NAWQA sites coverage (NAWQAPT) prepared by Curtis Price contains the ground water sampling locations and is available at <URL:ftp://wwwsd.cr.usgs.gov/pub/nawqa/sites.tgz>
For internal USGS use only.
The user must consult the metadata for each coverage to determine what is the appropriate use of the data.
As part of the March 26, 1999, data aggregation effort, the National Synthesis ground water specialists again reviewed the coverages that we already had assembled and came up with another set of comments. Those comments were distributed via email to each NAWQA study unit chief, ground water specialist, and GIS specialist on April 2, 1999. The questions are listed on <URL:http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa-only/datareq/status94b.html>.
The reviewers tried to ensure that the coverage metadata described details about the ground water study design, how the wells were selected, and which aquifer was being sampled. We also checked whether the network descriptions made sense and whether they matched the planning data base. We looked at maps of the wells and the ground water study boundaries to see if the wells looked randomly distributed (not clustered) and if the wells fell within the coverage boundary. A remarkable number of wells fell outside the study boundaries as delineated in the coverages. If the study boundary was not revised so that it encompassed all of the wells, we tried to make sure that the metadata explained why this situation occurred. If necessary, we renamed coverages to match the appropriate network codes and to match the type of boundary represented, a BND (overall area) or TRG (targeted land use).
We checked the coverages using checkdata.aml and the metadata using the MP metadata parser. Some of the metadata files still produce errors despite our efforts to have them corrected.
To accommodate the NAWQA data warehouse requirements for one data record per ground water polygon, we duplicated some of the coverages. For example, if the overall areal extent of a land use study was the same as the subunit survey boundary, we have two identical coverages, one for the overall boundary of the land use study and one for the boundary of the subunit survey. Analysts should keep this in mind when compiling ancillary data or analyzing water quality data to avoid double counting. In most cases, using the TRG coverage instead of the BND coverage probably is advisable.
Although the sucodes ucollusrc1a-e are listed in the network descriptions, each sucode has only 5 wells, so National Synthesis might combine these into one (ucollusrc1). Five coverages exist for the individual lusrc1a - lusrc1e sucodes and one coverage exists for all of them together (lusrc1).

The general structure of each boundary coverage is:
COVER# COVER-ID SUCODESUCODE is the combination of the 4-letter abbreviation for the NAWQA study unit plus the ground-water study network code (NETCODE).
Any fields besides SUCODE usually are ignored. When using the coverages, any interior polygon that has a blank SUCODE is considered to be outside of the ground-water study area. When analyzing data using the coverages, EXCLUDE the polygons that have a blank value for SUCODE.
The 1994 NAWQA study unit names and the 4-letter abbreviations are:
ALMN = ALLEGHENY AND MONONGAHELA BASINS CAZB = CENTRAL ARIZONA BASINS EIWA = EASTERN IOWA BASINS KANA = KANAWHA-NEW RIVER BASIN LERI = LAKE ERIE-LAKE ST. The files are available in anonymous ftp/pub/kjh/gwgis94/94gwpolys.tar.gz on hqwiftp.er.usgs.gov. The main directory is called 94gwpolys. Within that directory are 16 study unit subdirectories that contain the coverages for each study unit. In each study unit subdirectory, the coverages names are constructed as NETCODE_BND and NETCODE_TRG. The metadata file names are COVERNAME.met.
