This is a set of digital maps of the boundaries of land use studies (LUS) and study unit surveys (subunit surveys, SUS), conducted by the 1991 National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) study units. These coverages describe the sampling areas of the land use studies and study unit surveys, which represent two of the three ground-water study components of the National Water-Quality Assessment program. (The third ground-water component is the flow path studies).
The purpose of this data set is to describe the hydrogeologic units and predominant land uses that the NAWQA study units used for selecting wells for their sampling networks.
There are several types of boundaries:
1) the polygon coverage that delineates the entire areal extent of the hydrogeologic unit defined for study in the study unit survey and/or land use study, i.e., the ground-water network study boundary. This boundary includes the full range of land uses, not only the targeted land use. For example, for both a study unit survey and for an agricultural land use study in the Piedmont Carbonate area, the polygon would represent the entire Piedmont Carbonate area, the boundary of the overall area considered. The coverage naming convention is netcode_bnd, for example, LUSCR1_BND. In some cases one network polygon coverage was used for several targeted land uses or overall study areas so duplicate coverages exist. (See tables 1 and 2 under Supplemental_Information.)
2) the polygon coverage that delineates the targeted land use within the overall area described in #1. This was supplied by the study units if they used a "local" improved source of land use data to delineate the land uses instead of using GIRAS Anderson Level II categories (updated with 1990 population; see <URL:http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa/WRI94-4250.html>). For example, if the targeted areas are irrigated agriculture, the study unit would supply the coverage. Otherwise, National Synthesis was supposed to be able to derive the targeted land uses from GIRAS data. The coverage naming convention is netcode_trg, for example, LUSCR_TRG.
3) the polygon coverage of "local" improved land use data, if available, for the study unit. Following the example in #2, this would be the "non-GIRAS" improved land use data for all categories of land use, not only irrigated/non-irrigated land. The coverage naming convention is ____.ilu. (For San Joaquin, the coverage for almonds and vineyards is called LUS_ILU because the geographic extent is the land use study. For Upper Snake, the coverage is called USNK_ILU; the geographic extent is the Upper Snake study unit in Idaho.)
As noted above, in some cases for BND and TRG coverages, the same boundary describes more than one NETCODE and so we have multiple copies of the same coverage.
The data set version dated 3/36/2001 is a update of the data set dated 11/04/1997. In the 2001 version, the coverage names are consistent with updated sucodes and one coverage exists for each netcode. So, one boundary can describe more than one study, and that boundary is copied to the various coverages. (See processing step for 3/26/2001.)
Limitations_of_Data:
One of the limitations of the data set is that the maps came from 20 NAWQA study units, who compiled them from various source materials at various scales. Although we tried to make them as consistent as possible, the coverages are not uniform. Also, the quality of the on-line coverage documentation (INFO files covername.nar, covername.ref, covername.att, covername.doc) varies. Many of the study units did not explain how the coverages were used in selecting the wells. Users should plan to check other sources of information such as the study unit design plans, ground-water study description indexes available at <URL:http://okwaterweb.cr.usgs.gov/nawqa//sus96a/doc/study_index.html>, and so forth.
Another limitation is that some of the sampling sites fall outside of the ground-water study area as defined by the GIS coverage boundaries. Often this resulted from differences in scale of the maps used to locate the wells in the field from the GIS coverages used to derive the boundaries. At any rate, the wells are sampling the correct aquifers.
A third limitation is that many of the study units did not supply coverages of targeted land use.
Procedures_Used:
The NAWQA study units submitted these coverages in response to the data aggregation request issued by the National Synthesis teams in fall 1996 for boundaries of land use studies and study unit surveys. The guidelines are available on the Internet at <URL:http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa-only/datareq/gwgis91.html>.
Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
The NAWQA National Synthesis ground water teams reviewed the coverages during summer 1997 and issued a ground-water GIS data verification request in August 1997, which is available on the Internet at <URL:http://water.usgs.gov/nawqa-only/datareq/GWGISmemo.html>. The NAWQA study units responded to the questions raised in the memo. At that time, in response to the memo, the study units modified existing coverages and submitted new coverages.
Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets:
When using the coverages, consult the list of network codes and network descriptions used by National Synthesis, which is available from Curtis Price. A coverage should exist for each SUCODE on the list that is not an "aggregate" or a "subset."
Here is the original list of each sucode used by National Synthesis and the corresponding LUS coverage name. To keep pace with updated sucodes, the coverage names were changed in 2001. See processing steps for 3/26/2001.

The general structure of each boundary coverage is:
COVER# COVER-ID SUCODESUCODE is the combination of the 4-letter abbreviation for the NAWQA study unit plus the ground-water study network code (NETCODE). In some cases, the same boundary is used for more than one NETCODE and the boundary is copied to more than one coverage.
Any fields besides SUCODE usually are ignored. When using the coverages, any interior polygon that has a blank SUCODE is considered to be outside of the ground-water study area. When analyzing data using the coverages, EXCLUDE the polygons that have a blank value for SUCODE.
The 1991 NAWQA study unit names and the 4-letter abbreviations are:
