                               MEMORANDUM

To: National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) 1991 Study-unit Chiefs
           NAWQA National Leadership Team
NAWQA Data and Software Integration Group
Subject: Programs and Plans: Habitat-Data Aggregation Request
 Date: December 27, 1996

The purpose of this memorandum is to request data from
1991 study units for NAWQA's national data base. At this time,
National Synthesis is requesting habitat data for segments, reaches,
transects, transect points, geomorphic-channel units, and watershed-
management features. Additionally, responses are requested to a
survey on temperature and conductivity data from on-site monitors.
Study-unit responses for the data requested in this memorandum are
expected by February 14, 1997.

This data request is part of a series of planned data requests
outlined in Tim Miller's memorandum of September 18, 1996. Because
the guidance for this request has been delayed and the holiday/annual-
leave season has intervened, the above deadline for data submittal
provides seven weeks for study units to prepare and submit the
requested data.

The objective of this data request is to allow National Synthesis to
analyze habitat data, and to use it in the analysis of community data.
Detailed guidence and descriptions of the requested data are available
on the World Wide Web at:

<URL:  "http://wwwnc.usgs.gov/nceg/91agg/91aggregation.html">

The temperature and conductivity questionnaire is located at:

<URL:  "http://wwwnc.usgs.gov/nceg/91agg/temp.cond.Q.html">

The habitat-data request consists of seven components:

1. Segment table -- RDB file describing segment-level geomorphic
features such as gradient, sinuosity, and elevation.

2. Reach table -- RDB file describing reach-level characteristics
such as the stream type and the location of sampling.

3. Watershed-management feature table -- RDB file containing information
on structures and facilities near to the reach that may have an
    impact on water quality.

4. Geomorphic-channel Unit table -- RDB file describing the kind and
size of geomorphic channel units within the reach.

5. Transect table -- RDB file describing transect-level characteristics
such as channel and floodplain size, bank characteristics,
    vegetation, and available habitat.

6. Transect-point table -- RDB file containing data taken at points
along each transect, such as water depth and velocity, and
    describing the stream bed.

7. Answers to a questionnaire on the availability of temperature and
    conductivity data.

Thank you.
